Fairy Meadows is Pakistan's most iconic trekking destination and also the one with the most questions. This guide covers everything: the jeep track, the hike, the camping, when to go and what Nanga Parbat actually looks like when you get there.
Where Is Fairy Meadows?
Fairy Meadows (locally called Joot) is a high alpine meadow at roughly 3,300 metres in the Diamer district of Gilgit-Baltistan, sitting directly below the northern face of Nanga Parbat (8,126m) — the world's ninth-highest mountain. It is reached via a narrow jeep track and a walk through dense pine forest.
How to Get There
Step 1: Lahore to Raikot Bridge
The journey starts in Lahore — approximately 240km north to Raikot Bridge, taking 7-9 hours. We always break this with an overnight stop in Chilas halfway, to avoid arriving exhausted.
Step 2: The Jeep Track to Tatu Village
From Raikot Bridge, a local jeep takes you up one of Pakistan's most famous drives. The 16km track climbs 1,500 metres, for stretches runs along cliff edges with no barrier, and takes 60-90 minutes. Local jeep drivers know this road in their sleep. Trust them and enjoy it.
Step 3: Tatu to Fairy Meadows on Foot
From Tatu village at 2,900m, you walk or ride a horse for 2-3 hours through Himalayan pine forest. As you gain height, the trees thin and the first glimpses of Nanga Parbat appear. The moment you clear the treeline and see the full mountain framed by the meadow is something that does not leave you.
💡 Horse or Walk?
The walk is manageable for most reasonably fit people. Horses are available from Tatu for those who prefer it or for carrying bags. Walk yourself and let the horse carry the gear — it is more enjoyable that way.
Best Time to Visit
June & July — Peak Green
The meadow is at its most vivid, wildflowers in bloom, Nanga Parbat usually clear in mornings. Book accommodation well in advance.
August — Busy but Good
Excellent conditions but the busiest period. Midweek arrivals avoid weekend crowds.
September — Our Favourite
Fewer people, clearer skies, cooler temperatures. An excellent choice for photographers.
May & October — Shoulder
Mid-May the track opens. October brings early snow. Both possible but check conditions first.
What to See and Do
- Nanga Parbat sunrise: Set an alarm for 5am. The mountain catches the first light while the meadow is still in shadow — the colour change from grey to gold takes 20 minutes and is extraordinary.
- Beyal Campsite hike: A 3-hour round trip above the meadow where the mountain feels noticeably closer. The views back down the valley are spectacular.
- Nanga Parbat Basecamp: An optional full-day trek (8-10 hours return) for fit hikers. A guide is essential.
- Stargazing: Zero light pollution at 3,300m means the Milky Way is visible with the naked eye on clear nights.
What to Bring
- Down jacket — nights drop to 4-8C even in July
- Waterproof jacket — afternoon clouds and rain are common in summer
- Hiking boots for the Beyal or Basecamp treks
- Cash only — no ATMs anywhere near Fairy Meadows
- Headlamp for pre-dawn sunrise starts
- Snacks for the 2-3 hour walk up
- Reusable water bottle — stream water is clean but filter or purify it
⚠ Altitude Reminder
Fairy Meadows is at 3,300m. Most visitors arrive from much lower altitudes. Drink plenty of water, rest on arrival and do not rush the Beyal hike. Beyal and Basecamp go significantly higher.
Cost
Self-arranged: budget Rs 5,000-8,000 per person per day for guesthouse and meals. Jeep from Raikot Bridge costs roughly Rs 6,000-8,000 per jeep each way. Horse hire is Rs 2,000-3,000 per animal one way.
